Olive Seddon (b1946) tells us…
My mam (Sarah Ann Wears (Bertram)) used to go into Wilkinson’s shelter. The night it was bombed she was under the stairs at home with my nana (Edith Wears) and my sister Ann.
My nana used to go under the stairs as she was scared of the thunder and lightening. So when the bombs came under the stairs she went. She didn’t like my mam going into Wilkinsons shelter. I’m pleased she didn’t go to the shelter that night as we wouldn’t be here!
My nana lived in Coburg Street and Dockwray Square in those days. She wouldn’t go in the shelter. My mam said it wasn’t nice in there.
My mam’s sister, May, is still alive, she’s 92 and she said that as youngsters they would go outside to watch the bombs. No fear eh!
My parents were in Newcastle and Sunderland, when the war broke out. Mam was evacuated to Workington, strange, as it too was bombed. Dad was luckier, he went to a farm near Newcastle. Their stories about the air raids, were chilling.
