A commemorative plaque detailing the air raid shelter disaster has been commissioned and will soon be installed at the East End Youth and Community Centre on George Street on the site once occupied by the lemonade factory.
Andy and John Wilkinson, twin great grandsons of W.A. Wilkinson who founded the mineral water business, have very kindly donated the plaque after learning about the forthcoming 75th anniversary event.
Andy and John are themselves manufacturers, based in Yorkshire. They are keen that the plaque is ready for people to view at the evening memorial event at St Augustin’s Church on May 3rd.
The plaque donation will be warmly welcomed, especially by the families of those lost in the disaster. We have often been asked why there is no plaque to identify the site and happily now that issue is to be resolved.
