Saturday May 3rd 1941 – a single bomb from a lone enemy aircraft scored a direct hit on the public air raid shelter in the basement of W.A. Wilkinson’s lemonade factory in North Shields. 107 people were killed. Entire families were wiped out.
It was the worst single bomb death toll outside of London during the entire war.
